I applied to go on placement to Da Nang with GGC Volunteers through my physiotherapy course at James Cook University. My father had fought in the Vietnam War on two tours as a tunnel rat.  I had seen what the war had done to him and through two previous visits to Vietnam, I saw how the country and its people were left.

In around June of 2015 I, along with five of my classmates were invited to join GGC Volunteers make a change in Vietnam.  I was petrified that I would not be able to help these children…. however, within a day I was playing with the kids and before I knew it I was actually helping them.

We had master classes with Sandie (an experienced Paediatric Physiotherapist) who gave us some tricks of the trade and not only taught us how to treat the child in front of us, but how to teach the parents, how to communicate with the caregivers with no common language and how to make the most of the surroundings.

The opportunity to work in Vietnam for 5 weeks has been one of the most rewarding and challenging activities I have ever experienced.....I hope to participate in a program like this again, it has inspired me to take my career in a completely more exciting and rewarding path!... the opportunity to work in Vietnam, to immerse myself in the culture, to learn so much about myself has inspired me to do more.

My voluntary experience with my ggc family has deeply enriched my physiotherapy practice and personal insights. The short lived 3 weeks I spent with the welcoming staff and beautiful children have given me more than I possibly could have given them.

Volunteering with GGC was one of the best experiences I ever had! I had the opportunity to work alongside Mr Phuc, a very experienced physiotherapist, and other staff members....their work and volunteering extends across different organisations and facilities, which provided a broader spectum of experience. The trip and experience was truly rewarding and also allowed me to indulge and understand the Vietnamese culture even more.

"The 5 week placement in Vietnam was exceptional. We were well prepared with what to bring, information on the culture of Vietnam as well as important information on conditions we might see. This enables us to refresh our memories and be ready on the first day. The staff were all fantastic, so supportive and a lot of fun to be around. They were always very accommodating. The placement itself provided us with an opportunity to see and treat children with so many conditions which required us to be flexible and creative in our intervention plans. The staff assisted us in a way that allowed us to be as independent as possible whilst teaching us ways to continually improve our techniques and knowledge. The children and their families or carers were so gorgeous, it made all the hard work so worthwhile. I can highly recommend a trip to Vietnam with GGC Volunteers. It really is an amazing opportunity to develop your skills and knowledge whilst being immersed in another country and culture".
